The Erlanger East campus is situated on Gunbarrel and Crane Road in the southeast suburbs of Chattanooga. It is surround by large box retail and single family housing. Erlanger envisioned this new project as an opportunity not only to expand their campus but also improve the lifestyle and health of
its community.

Like most sprawl developments, the context is big box retail fronted by a sea of parking along a very busy road. However, the existing campus is strikingly different. All parking is behind the hospital and a seventy-foot-wide
swatch of lawn fronts Gunbarrel Road. Although there is a generous amount of existing lawn, the campus lacked defined open space and a cohesive campus language. Erlanger imagined the East campus as lifestyle wellness hospital. They wanted to infuse a hospitality-like feel into the design and use the building, its program, and the site as a tool to educate and promote health in the community.
